The problem it solves
Communities see distress before institutions do — in what people post, how patterns change, what goes quiet. Most platforms either ignore those signals or weaponize them. Beacon takes a third path: notice early, respond with support.
How it works
Beacon watches for wellbeing signals in community activity and routes what it finds toward supportive response paths — surfacing resources and enabling human outreach. Detection is an invitation to help, never a verdict on a person; nothing Beacon does is punitive by design.
Verified behaviors
Every claim below maps to a dated behavioral proof against the live production service.
Ordinary venting and dark humor are not mistaken for genuine crisis signals.
method: a benign frustrated post and a dark-humor post submitted to the live service · observed: the benign vent returned severity 0 with no case opened; the dark-humor post was correctly identified as dark humor and also opened no case · VERIFIED June 12, 2026
Genuine passive distress language is detected and escalated to the correct outreach tier.
method: a post containing genuine passive distress language submitted to the live service · observed: detected at severity 3 with the correct signals identified; a real case was opened, escalated to rung 2, with a 4-hour outreach window · VERIFIED June 12, 2026
If the detection model's response can’t be parsed, the message is queued and retried rather than silently passed as clear.
method: during the test above, the model's first response included extra text the parser couldn't handle · observed: the malformed response was rejected and queued for retry rather than defaulting to clear; the retry succeeded 36 seconds later with the correct detection — a real parsing failure on a genuinely serious message never resulted in a silent miss · VERIFIED June 12, 2026
Case records are stored without raw identity, using a one-way hash of the user rather than personally identifying information.
method: the opened case was queried back from the live cases endpoint · observed: the case record persisted with a user hash only, no raw identity field, alongside correct escalation window timestamps · VERIFIED June 12, 2026
Honest limitations
- Beacon is not a diagnostic tool and not a substitute for crisis services — it surfaces signals for human, supportive response.
- Signal detection is probabilistic; the design bias is toward gentle response paths precisely because false positives happen.
